My concept is inspired by 1970s science fiction graphic art and storytelling in graphic novels. The problem I set out to solve was how to visually capture the end of civilisation in a way that provokes reflection and emotional impact. My research involved studying iconic sci-fi illustrations, analysing narrative techniques in graphic novels, and exploring how typography and visual elements can be evocative. This analysis led me to weave together striking imagery, text excerpts, desolate landscapes, and impactful quotes, creating a sense of movement that reflects time as the fourth dimension. The final outcome is a thought-provoking interpretation of civilisation’s downfall, designed to highlight the potential consequences for humanity if we don’t change our course. H.G. Wells addressed the problem as early as 1895, and his insights informed my approach. The ephemera of an A2 poster and a ticket are held in a pocket within the book, further immersing the viewer. Created in 2025 for the Design for Production subject at Swinburne Online, this project used InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop. It was awarded Best Limited Edition at the C2 Awards in 2025, with the poster receiving an honourable mention. I have used embellishments and a die-cut, with an enclosure and a 22-page CMYK hardcover print.
